- 4-25 & 27-2002 Thursday & Saturday Fished Jacobs Fork in South Mountain State Park for some DH (Delayed Harvest). (map & info.) I started down near the campgrounds and fished up to the ranger station area parking lot. Once I went past where the crowds fish I started catching them on size 14 Adams, Irresistible Wulff, Yellow Humpy and a Hexagenia . In heavy fished areas with slow water they were taking midge pupa and even at that some were turning heads at those. It took coming up from behind slowly and making long casts to catch them. If you stood there facing them and standing where they could see you (as some are prone to do thinking it works) they would inspect and reject the flies. With the water level being low and clear it was fun trying these DH fish. There were some of the biggest hatches I have ever seen going on the last 2 days up there. There were tons of flies It was a non-stop hatch from the time I arrived till the time I left both days.
- 3-1-2002 Friday Went up to help stock first day of March for Delayed harvest on the Mitchell River. Had several folks show up to help. Pat Baker, John Thomas, Joe Mc Donough, Reid Pollard, Stan Beck, and me plus Chuck Melton ( driving the truck ), Gary Gouge directing us what to do. We filled the stream in about 1 hour. Then proceeded to catch them till your arm was sore. If you never get to fish much or are starting out
Fly Fishing there is nothing like wetting your line in a delayed harvest water on the day they stock. Joe was a beginner to fly fishing and he caught over 30 fish in 2 hours. Not bad for a beginner huh? Fishing on a delayed harvest stream when they restock is easy fishing and it gets the blood going again if you don't get to get out often and it is heaven if you are a beginner. Pat Baker caught the monster of the day. It was a 17 inch brookie that must have been around 3 lbs. Great time was had by all.
